Wednesday morning found us at D.C. Central Kitchen - a kitchen that produces thousands of meals everyday for many organizations that help the poor of DC. This kitchen is in the basement of the largest homeless shelter in the United States which houses over 6000 men, women and children every night. Incorporated with the food prep is a program to train those in need of a job to work in the food personnel business as kitchen assistances and chefs. As you can see we all worked hard. It was great to work along side such a variety of others - the regular staff, those students about to finish the program, some of the new students that will begin the official program in a couple of weeks, another youth group , some individual high school students who came to get their required service hours, and some who come just because - like the Georgetown law student who works for a congressman and will graduate from Law School in three weeks. Some of our students were able to hear the stories of some of these people. The one message all the people we have encountered have to for our students is "to stay in school."
